Abstract

Historically, NCAA policies prevented athletes from accepting financial incentives based on their amateur status. Since 2021, collegiate athletes have been able to monetize their athletic identities through Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) policies. During the four years since the NCAA’s enacted its interim NIL policy, there have been numerous efforts to develop national standards to unify the over 30 different existing state policies. Combined with the rise of other policies such as the transfer portal, and prevalence of sports gambling, the collegiate athletics landscape has shifted dramatically. This paper examines how collegiate athletes develop navigational capital, how their support systems engage in this process, and what institutional resources are offered. Implementation implications for college administrators and policymakers are also discussed.
