Revisiting Histories to Imagine Futures: A Scoping Review on Reading and Teaching Historical Fiction

Thu, April 9, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 3

Abstract

Reading difficult histories can demonstrate that injustice faced today is not an individual malfunction but may have sociohistorical roots. Historical fiction offers a safe third space for readers to investigate such themes of injustice to imagine a just future. This presentation will present a scoping review on the description, selection criterion, purposes, and teaching practices used for reading and teaching historical fiction. The presentation will conclude with research and pedagogical implications for teaching historical fiction in classrooms.
