From Service to STEM: Designing a Service-Learning Environment for Teaching Data Skills to Women Veterans

Fri, April 10, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

This project describes the learning environment created for the Enhancing Data Skills (EDS) program, a federally funded, service-learning initiative designed to equip military veterans with foundational data skills through a virtual, community-based learning environment. Grounded in Experiential Learning Theory, the program integrates real-world data projects, reflective practice, and social learning to enhance participants’ technical competencies and sense of career readiness. We report initial findings from the first cohort, including increased data self-efficacy, perceived employability, and ambition. The EDS model illustrates how intentionally designed learning environments can foster inclusion and skill development in data skills education, improving educational access and opportunity for adult learners.
