Abstract

The integration of virtual world environments (VWEs) into language education offers a transformative avenue for developing intercultural communicative competencies (ICC). However, gaps persist in synthesizing diverse interventions, implementing effective strategies, and addressing challenges. This study conducted a systematic review of 27 peer-reviewed articles published between 2014 and 2024. Findings indicate that VWEs support the development of ICC by enabling immersive cultural simulations, promoting collaborative intercultural interactions, and enhancing learner motivation. VWEs also offer structured yet authentic spaces for learners to engage with diverse cultures and improve their communicative abilities. However, the review also identified key challenges, including technical barriers, unequal access to digital infrastructure, and the risk of reductive or stereotypical cultural representations.
