The dark side of AI in Teacher Education: Evidence from a Systematic Review

Abstract

This systematic review examines the dark sides ofartificial intelligence (AI) in teacher education, based on 61 empirical studies published between 2020 and 2025. The dark sides of AI on different groups of teachers mainly include identity, practice, and social relationship levels. The effects are uneven across teacher groups: pre-service teachers face identity confusion, in-service teachers encounter practice challenges, and teacher educators raise ethical concerns. Although AI has the potential to bring about change, its application may exacerbate existing inequalities and erode the core values of education if the dimensions of teacher identity, teaching integrity, and social equity are ignored. This review provides important insights for policy-making in the field of teacher education, teacher training, and support for teacher education students.
