Abstract

This paper explores how cultural myths, particularly the myth of Christopher Columbus, are reinforced through biased educational materials, including AI-generated content. Rooted in an eight-year research partnership, this paper examines the persistent influence of limited narratives in freely available resources and highlights how bias is embedded in both traditional and AI-generated texts. Designed for literacy professionals, early childhood and elementary teachers, and teacher educators, this paper models how educators can use critical literacy as a tool for interrogating biases found within Generative AI systems. This paper explores strategies to disrupt dominant narratives and center marginalized voices, fostering anti-biased pedagogy. This session promotes critical literacy and professional growth by challenging the systems that shape what and how students learn.
