Wed, April 8, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

Ethnic student organizations serve as important spaces to affirm the experiences of students of color, offering platforms for expression, community-building, and advocacy within predominantly white institutions. For Hmong American students, these ethnic student organizations provide opportunities to explore and affirm their cultural and academic identities, while also fostering a sense of belonging on campus. This exploratory historical analysis seeks to illuminate and document the work of the Hmong American Student Organization. Through the systematic analysis of archival documents collected from HASO, this study draws out emergent themes that reflect the organization’s growth, cultural affirmation, and sustained advocacy over the past two decades. Implications and recommendations also discuss to better support Hmong American students in higher education.
