This study reports on the second iteration of a design based learning project that supported students in two 7th grade civics classes to identify pressing civic issues in their community, historicize them, and envision more just social futures by drawing on speculative and imaginative theoretical frameworks. This case study analyzed the contents of one student groups’ final Padlet project and their in-class presentation to understand their civic concern and their future visions. The case study group selected housing affordability and they speculated on a future where affordable housing was guaranteed for all. One limitation was that grassroots and community organizations were not accounted for in solutions. This work extends scholarship focused on community-based, civic inquiry.
