Abstract

This study explores faculty readiness to integrate generative AI (GAI) into higher education using the TPACK-21 framework. A survey of 127 faculty members at a large southwestern U.S. university assessed perceived knowledge across seven TPACK domains in relation to 21st-century skills. Findings show strong confidence in traditional pedagogical and content knowledge but lower confidence in technology-related domains, particularly GAI. While faculty demonstrate strong foundations in traditional teaching competencies, they report needing support to understand and apply GAI effectively. This study highlights a gap between pedagogical/content expertise and confidence in GAI integration to teach 21st century skills, emphasizing the need for targeted, holistic professional development.
