Naming and Erasure: Rethinking the ‘English Speaker’ Label in Dual Language Bilingual Education

Abstract

In dual language bilingual education (DLBE), labels such as “English speakers” are often treated as neutral descriptors. However, these terms can obscure the complex identities of students from English-speaking backgrounds who come from families that have experienced intergenerational language loss. Drawing on cultural violence theory and critical consciousness, this conceptual paper critiques the term “English speakers” and proposes the alternative term Heritage Language Reclaimers. This term better captures the agency, resilience, and ongoing efforts of students and families working to reclaim minoritized heritage languages, particularly those that are less commonly taught. We argue that naming is a powerful ideological act with educational and political consequences, and we call for naming practices in DLBE that promote linguistic justice.
