In recent years, institutions in China have been putting strong emphasize on recruitment for global talents, particularly under the Double First-Class initiative. Though, many have faced retention challenges. This qualitative study investigates a critical question: Once international talent is recruited, what factors influence their motivation to stay? The study interviewed 9 foreign faculties who currently working in China and 3 administrative staff responsible for recruitment. Findings reveal that cultural affinity and family considerations often outweigh salary or career development in long-term retention. The study recommends providing transparent compensation explanations and offering more acculturation workshops for faculty and their families. These measures can strengthen international faculty retention and inform strategic planning for sustainable global talent development in Chinese higher education.
