Abstract

Women experience gender inequalities disproportionately in all facets of their lives. This historical qualitative research study explores how gender inequalities exist within the Utah arts and culture sector. Barriers to gender equality include a lack of access to engaging in or studying the arts, under- or misrepresentation due to gender bias, underevaluation, which prevents women from realizing financial stability and security, and underrepresentation in leadership roles in the arts and culture sector. Over the last few decades, the state has addressed some of these barriers through various interventions, but research is limited on their impact. An objective of this study was to inform resources provided and future interventions aimed at promoting gender equality within the Utah arts and culture sector.
