Unforgetting Migration: Designing Pedagogies of Belonging for Justice-Oriented Classrooms

Wed, April 8, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Ground Floor, Gold 2

Abstract

This project shares a multi-site, design-based, practitioner research exploring how educators co-design migration-affirming pedagogies that center belonging. Grounded in the Re-Imagining Migration framework and theories of culturally sustaining pedagogy, translanguaging, and unforgetting, this study spans two U.S. contexts to develop and analyze design principles that treat language, memory, and civic storytelling as tools of inclusion. We present emerging findings, including classroom practices, systemic tensions, and tools that reframe welcoming as a daily civic act. Participants will engage in collaborative inquiry to expand and adapt these principles across their settings, imagining schools as justice-driven, story-rich spaces of belonging.
