This study explores the intricate relationship between digital leisure and creative thinking among East Asian youth. Using PISA 2022 data from five East Asian regions, we categorize digital leisure into “casual digital leisure” and “serious digital leisure” types and find they have differential effects. We reveal that family socioeconomic status moderates these effects, suggesting digital leisure is a double-edged sword. Moreover, our findings highlight that digital and creative self-efficacy are key mediating mechanisms. The paper challenges simplistic screen-time restrictions and advocates for targeted strategies that empower youth to engage in meaningful digital leisure.
