To Voice or not to Voice? Principals’ Experiences with Exercising Voice in Schools and Districts

Fri, April 10, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

This qualitative study explored perceptions and experiences from 21 principals across the US on exercising principal voice in school and district contexts. Using the principal voice model as a conceptual framework, adapted from the school voice model (Quaglia, 2016), three key findings emerged from participant interview data. These findings have implications for leaders and the systems in which they work. Findings from this study shed light on a topic not yet fully understood in the literature or in practice; principal voice, especially when contextualizing this phenomenon within schools and districts. This study has further implications on the dynamics between principals and their supervisors.
