Unpacking the Roles of Teacher Leaders: Perceptions of In-Service Teachers and Building-Level Leaders

Abstract

This mixed-methods research study sought to understand the role of teacher leadership in one northeast state. Given the investment of the state into teacher leadership resources, it was important to understand how in-service teachers and building-level leaders perceived these roles and the conditions that led to teacher leadership opportunities. The findings revealed that teacher leaders have both formal and informal leadership roles. Findings also indicated that community building and engagement are necessary to foster teacher leaders.
