Fri, April 10, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown, Floor: 6th Floor, Broadway

Abstract

Higher education bears the mission of nurturing students into active citizens of democratic society. While most student development theories emphasize students’ identity, their civic identity remains underexplored. This study utilizes a systematic literature review to provide a comprehensive understanding of the definition, formation, and functionality of civic identity among college students. The findings show that scholars define civic identity as commitment to contributing to the society, belonging to community, and respect for others. Interventions such as service-learning, community-based projects and critical reflection enhance college students’ civic identity development. Further, an enhanced civic identity promotes students’ civic and political behaviors, resilience in reaching consensus, and the pursuit of lifelong goals, which are essential to address political polarization and disengagement.
