Abstract

Engineering design is considered a core concept of engineering practice that increases with experience (American Society for Engineering Education, 2020). This systematic literature review looks at instructional practices within secondary education to analyze how engineering is enacted by teachers with implications for learners. The 18 included studies identified diverse frameworks, methodologies, and outcomes for students. Variations in implementation emphasized integration within science and sociocultural perspectives in middle school while high school studies included design in technical coursework and electives. By identifying current practices researchers tend a fertile landscape that drives educational growth allowing futures to be reimagined for student experiences that enrich interest, develop skills, and improve social consciousness through engineering design.
