Abstract

This systematic review synthesized research on the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) to support student learning in higher education from 2020 to early 2025. From an initial search of 527 studies, a total of 53 articles were selected for review. Research spanned 24 countries, with the U.S., China, and Turkey most represented. Studies primarily focused on language and education disciplines, with undergraduate contexts dominating. Mixed-methods designs were most common, and ChatGPT was the most frequently used tool. Theoretical frameworks varied widely, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of GenAI integration in higher education. The faculty leveraged GenAI for instructional design, feedback, and assessment. Six themes emerged regarding student outcomes, including enhanced writing, critical thinking, and motivation.
