Multimedia’s Influence on Children’s STEM Experiences: A Bridge from School to Home and Back Again

Wed, April 8, 3:45 to 5:15pm PDT (3:45 to 5:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Poster Hall - Exhibit Hall A

Abstract

Early access to STEM learning opportunities is critical for achieving equitable educational outcomes and nurturing lifelong curiosity. Disparities in our education systems limit access to high-quality STEM instruction for racially minoritized and low-income children and families. Educational media can be an avenue to strengthen STEM instruction and home-school connections for more families. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the influence of STEM focused multimedia on preschool children. Participants had access to STEM focused multimedia from PBS Kids The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!™ content. Results show that children transferred science and engineering behaviors to their play, developed positive attitudes towards science and engineering, and connected school learning to their home environment.
