Abstract

The present study investigated 1) the impact of a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) course on students' understanding of Human-Centered Design (HCD), application of HCD processes, and understanding of modern slavery and 2) the types of collaborative interactions between participating students to understand the students’ experiences in the course. Three students from a public university in the United States of America (USA) and eight students from a public university in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) participated in the COIL course. Six students completed the retrospective pre-post survey after the course. Findings indicated that the COIL course enhanced students’ understanding of HCD, application of HCD processes, and understanding of modern slavery and several highly interactive collaborative episodes occurred.
