This presentation examines, through content analysis, the different ways in which the violin is used as a cultural bearer through the expression of genre, aesthetics, cultural knowledge, physical behaviour, and worldview. Through the lenses of new materialism and decoloniality, and the genre of Argentine tango, this conceptual literature review and analysis demonstrates ways in which teachers might reconsider music education practice, particularly for string players, and how this lens contributes to the conference theme of Unforgetting Histories and Imagining Futures. The inclusion of the body and behavior related to genre, opens up new enriching perspectives and reveals many previously hidden angles of music knowledge and experience. This is strings-crossing-borders both physically and conceptually.
