Abstract

Special education is amid a polycrisis (an interplay of multiple problems that combine to create significant harm), and social and emotional learning (SEL) programs offer a potential solution. However, little research has been conducted on best supports for special educators to effectively implement SEL curricula, especially in rural settings, which have unique strengths and challenges. Explicit coaching is a promising practice for promoting implementation of evidence-based practices with fidelity. We used a multi-phase, mixed methods design within a descriptive multiple-case study framework to explore how rural educators experienced targeted instructional coaching for the implementation of Second Step (R), a widely used SEL curriculum. Findings suggest teachers increased implementation fidelity, which led to improvements in inclusive practices, pedagogical skills, and educator confidence.
