Unforgetting Abuelitas: Examining the Depiction of Latinx Characters in Children’s Picture Books

Fri, April 10, 7:45 to 9:15am PDT (7:45 to 9:15am PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level Two, Room 303A

Abstract

The content analysis examined abuelitas (Latina grandmothers) as main characters in contemporary children’s picture books. The theoretical framework, composed of LatCrit, Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, and Funds of Knowledge, examines how abuelitas are portrayed as cultural transmitters, caregivers, and storytellers. We analyzed illustrations, visual and textual portrayals of abuelitas, text features, and key themes. Preliminary findings reveal cultural transmission, linguistic representation, emotional tone and appearance, and visibility of family knowledge. This research highlights how children’s literature shapes understandings of identity, family, and culture. The research team calls on educators and authors to honor family knowledge in early literacy. In line with AERA’s theme, we “unforget” the lived histories of abuelitas and imagine more inclusive futures for education.
