Abstract

Based on the 2018 China Household Income Survey (CHIP) data, an empirical analysis was conducted on the impact of China's free compulsory education policy on the intergenerational mobility of rural residents' income. Research has found that the policy of free compulsory education has significantly promoted the intergenerational mobility of rural residents' income. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the policy of free compulsory education has a more significant promoting effect on the intergenerational mobility of income in the central and western regions and among men. It has a significant effect on both low-education and low-income families at the same time. Further analysis reveals that the increase in individual years of education significantly reduces the intergenerational correlation of income between parents and children.
