Abstract

Instructional coaching is a key leadership competency for school principals; however, its emphasis varies across leadership preparation programs. One program in the southern United States develops principal residents’ instructional coaching and leadership competencies via case studies. Instructional coaching within principal preparation and its impact on student achievement is an understudied phenomenon. Studies have demonstrated that PLCs are a valuable mechanism for improving student achievement (Liu & Yin, 2024; Park et al., 2019). Using a sample of 31 PLC case studies, our research shows a substantial increase in the percentage of students meeting or exceeding grade level expectations on state assessment accountability data in math, reading, science, and social studies compared to the prior year’s data.
