Abstract

We utilize keystroke logging behavior interpreted via Graham’s Revised Writer(s)-Within-Community Model of Writing to investigate enacted behaviors while writing. By utilizing a Markov Chain, we identified six distinct patterns indicative of revision and metacognitive monitoring when interpreted via the lens of self-regulated learning (SRL) as a component of Graham’s model of writing. Then, we utilized multinomial logistic regression to predict the likelihood a student might enact these behaviors based on their self-reported goal orientation scores in comparison to a reference group. Implications of findings include mastery approach goal orientation has higher odds of enacting metacognitive processes in comparison to the reference group, while performance goal orientations suggest increased odds of surface-level revision behavior.
