Abstract

While coaching programs have proliferated in medical education, few resources exist to measure coaching skill beyond perception surveys. This paper describes the development of a C-OSTE designed for faculty coaches of M2 students. Actors were trained to portray students and assess performance across four cases. Coaches submitted learning plans and completed a feedback survey. Outcomes included performance metrics, learning plan content, and survey results. Coaches performed best on communication and relationship-building behaviors and less well on behaviors to improve motivation and self-efficacy. Most learning goals were related to the communication domain. Perceptions were mixed; though coaches believed the cases were relevant to their role, not all believed creating learning plans was helpful. Some coaches also felt the experience was anxiety-provoking.
