Abstract

A multi-case study, this research project seeks to surface and center the thinking and theorizing of pre-service social studies teachers about teaching about the racial violence of lynching in the American South. All pre-service social studies teachers earning their teaching credential in an MAT program in the American South, participants struggled with how pedagogically democratic and open they should teach about lynching, what content they should include and how to organize their curriculum, and the fear of inflicting or furthering trauma amongst their students.
