From Faculty-Centric to Institution-Wide: Expanding Mentorship in Higher Education for Women Staff

Thu, April 9, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: Gold Level, Gold 1

Abstract

This study explores mentorship experiences among women-identified, non-instructional staff in U.S. higher education, addressing a critical gap in professional development research. Grounded in Rockquemore’s network-mentor model, it challenges faculty-centric frameworks by advocating for staff inclusive mentoring structures. Using a cross-sectional survey (N=276) results reveal disparities in access to mentors and sponsors, particularly among women of color and support staff, while highlighting the importance of role models and professional development. Findings underscore the need for institution-wide mentoring systems that reflect diverse staff trajectories and promote equity. This research contributes to expanding scholarship on staff in higher education.
