Abstract

This study examines how prior computing and music experience, along with music preferences, influence learners’ attitudes and experiences in a coding summer camp that integrates music creation through Hip-hop. Using a mixed-methods design, data were collected from 76 participants aged 10 to 17 across three years. Results indicate that participants, regardless of background, experienced improved confidence, motivation, and enjoyment in computing. The study highlights the value of engaging diverse learners in computing through contextually relevant coding environments rooted in constructionist principles. Findings can inform the design of inclusive informal spaces in computing education.
