Abstract

This paper establishes cycling methodologies, a novel approach to qualitative inquiry in which participants use bicycles to observe and make art as a means of exploring phenomena. Cycling methodologies enrich qualitative inquiry by (1) expanding arts-based and participatory modes of qualitative research, particularly with marginalized groups including children, (2) offering an embodied means of engaging with data, and (3) challenging normative ethics practices. This paper describes how cycling methodologies align with new materialist frameworks, while inviting their adaptability across diverse theoretical orientations. This paper suggests cycling methodologies as pertinent to the future imaginaries of just educational research in qualitative inquiry.
