This paper reports mixed-methods analysis of a North Dakota teacher survey that sought to understand the state of the profession and teaching shortages. Informed by Kraft and Lyon’s (2024) model of the state of the profession, it shifts from a societal perspective to that of teachers. Because students (future teachers) first learn about the profession from their own teachers, this paper examines factors shaping whether or not teachers would recommend the career, identifying four factors: experience, respect, job satisfaction, and place. This paper contributes to literatures including study of the teacher pipeline and has practical policy implications for broadening the teaching workforce, a necessary step towards a new vision for education.
