Abstract

This paper argues that the study of continuity is just as important as research on organizational change for managing and leading higher education institutions. Organizational continuity may be essential for ensuring that the primary structures and systems of an institution continue to advance its mission and strategic priorities. Therefore, we offer an original framework for conducting research on the antecedents, maintenance processes, and outcomes associated with organizational continuity in higher education. Research on continuity can inform understandings of organizational change, given the need to both disrupt and maintain continuity during the change process. Furthermore, from a critical theory perspective, researchers can examine how the intentional creation of instability can erode the continuity necessary to move forward with equity-focused change initiatives.
