Abstract

Latino men experience disproportionate enrollment and completion outcomes across all education sectors. In the Nuevo South region, the rapid growth of the Latino population, coupled with historical erasure and racialization of the population, calls for a better understanding of how students navigate the vertical transfer process. This convergent mixed-method study uses representative statewide quantitative and qualitative data sets to understand the influence of academic, financial, labor force, and familial demands and supports on transfer-intending community college Latino men. Quantitative findings examine the factors that predict transfer, and qualitative findings unpack the nuances of those factors. We analyze across both research methods to explore divergent and convergent results to better understand Latino men’s transfer outcomes in the Nuevo South.
