This study explores how transfer students can shape institutional change through participatory action research (PAR) within the Liberal Studies (LS) department at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Conducted by transfer students, the research identified key challenges including lack of belonging, advising gaps, and emotional adjustment. Using peer-to-peer interviews and thematic analysis, students highlighted the value of Transfer Student Capital—support from family, peers, and community—as essential to their success. Recommendations include a welcome series, peer mentorship, faculty training, improved advising tools, and increased visibility of transfer voices. The study demonstrates that centering student experience in research and policy design fosters more inclusive, supportive academic environments and offers a replicable model for enhancing transfer student integration and success.
