Rearticulating Progressive Education: A Mixed-Methods Study

Fri, April 10, 1:45 to 3:15pm PDT (1:45 to 3:15pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

This mixed-methods study explores how educators across diverse contexts define, interpret, and enact progressive education today. Despite the enduring influence of progressive ideals, there is little consensus on what constitutes progressive education in contemporary practice. Through a survey grounded in six domains, we aim to document current understandings and instructional approaches associated with progressive education. The study also examines how educators’ beliefs, identities, and institutional contexts shape their practices. Thus, this research contributes to a more coherent vision of progressive education and informs teacher preparation, school leadership, and equity-driven reform in K-12 settings. Findings can be used to support efforts to align educational practice with progressive, student-centered values.
