A Critical Literature Review: Counternarratives of Queer Youth

Thu, April 9, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

As an educational researcher, I conducted a critical literature review on queer youth counter-narratives. I was motivated by the increasing number of youth in the U.S. claiming nonbinary or queer identities and wanted to understand how they challenge dominant narratives. My analysis of nine peer-reviewed journals revealed that scholars discuss these counter-narratives within the contexts of school, home, immigration, and community. I found that youth use counter-narratives as "denials" and "counterversions" to push back against master narratives. This review aims to contribute to the field and inform future studies on queer youth identity.
