A Review of K-12 Leadership Resistance to Exclusionary LGBTQ+ Policies: A Tempered Radicalism Perspective

Thu, April 9, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), Los Angeles Convention Center, Floor: Level One, Petree D

Abstract

This paper drew on social justice leadership and tempered radicalism frameworks to explore prior research on how school leaders maneuver within and against institutional constraints when oppressive policies exist. We paid specific attention to anti-LGBTQ+ policies in connection with polycrises affecting undocumented/immigrant communities, anti-Black curriculum bans, ongoing settler colonialism, and public health. We found 3 studies that addressed leadership resistance specifically in the context of anti-LGBTQ+ oppression. To support and prepare leaders who subvert institutional oppression, we call for research on school leaders’ subtle resistance as linked actions of moral and strategic acuity.
