Blame and Buttress: Higher Education and the Defense of Democracy

Abstract

Our study investigates the complex and often contested relationship between higher
education and American democracy, focusing on how institutions of higher learning
have simultaneously been valorized as buttresses of democratic principles and blamed
for democratic shortcomings across key historical moments.
