Online Pedagogies in the Middle Grades: A Scoping Review

Abstract

Online pedagogies are increasing throughout the middle grades in various formats. This scoping review examined the existing literature pertaining to middle grades online pedagogies for young adolescents to map the current directions and overall state of research. The scoping review focused on virtual pedagogy in the middle grades to examine how the Association for Middle Level Education’s essential attributes of a successful middle school are directly or indirectly addressed in existing research of online pedagogy for middle level education. Researched-focused and pedagogically-centered articles between 2013 and 2024 were analyzed according to key standardized details to reveal dominant trends and gaps in online approaches, national or international contexts, and connections to essential attributes.
