Abstract

Children's picture books can shape young children’s understanding of autism. We analyzed 29 picture books featuring autistic characters (published 2015-2025) available from a large, public library system. We examined autistic character representation, authors’ relationships to autism, and overarching messages of books. Findings indicated diverse portrayals of characters, but highlighted gaps in representation for characters who are female, non-White, and use alternative communication modalities. Most authors had personal or professional connections to autism; one-third of books were authored by autistic individuals. Book messages focused on teaching readers about clinical characteristics of autism and promoting a message of inclusion. Educators can use this information to select books that reflect diversity in autism representation and support inclusion, understanding, and acceptance of autistic individuals.
