Results of the New Mexico Native American Capstone and Graduation Profile Study: Leveraging Edu-Local Goals and Values

Abstract

Our research project examines the importance of community and cultural engagement which has received lash back as an ineffective contribution to students K-12 learning. Although, through the advocacy of Indigenous leaders in New Mexico, two legislative actions were implemented that intends to build off local goals and values. The capstone and graduate profiles are a unique approach to assessing students’ success in education that changes teaching, student’s lives, and the meaning of education. Our paper provides the results of impact upon three largely Indigenous based schools in New Mexico and shows that self-awareness contributes to a student's ability to self-reflect and assess their role within the community context.
