Abstract

The purpose of this action research study is to investigate an alternative assessment for teacher certification. The Teaching for Equity Project (TEP) is a rigorous assessment that incorporates equity- and student-centered practices, such as ungrading, to demonstrate readiness to teach. We analyzed artifacts, interviews, focus groups, and exit surveys and found that TCs perceived the TEP as an effective assessment in demonstrating their readiness. In addition, we found that specific features of the TEP, namely authenticity, cycles of critical reflection, accountability, and a focus on the learning process, were instrumental to the development of that readiness. This presentation provides examples from TC’s TEP artifacts that may inform and inspire teacher educators and other Educator Preparation Programs.
