Abstract

The rapid growth of online learning, coupled with concerns about worse student outcomes in online classes, highlights the need for effective support and training for online course design and instruction. This study addresses an evidence gap by investigating how comprehensive professional development (CPD) programs influence online course design practices. We analyzed Canvas course shells from 94 faculty at two community colleges (2016-2022). Using an existing rubric, we assessed features including scaffolding, student agency, and interactivity before and after an instructor completed the CPD. Preliminary findings suggest CPD influences course organization and engagement, with broad improvements observed across the learning and course design constructs. This research underscores how CPD can enhance online pedagogy, fostering greater student engagement and success.
