Abstract

Providing timely feedback during instructional observations is critical for effective teaching development. Traditional post-lesson models often delay reinforcement, limiting real-time learning opportunities and requiring instructors to recall and apply suggestions later (Hattie & Timperley, 2007). Bug-in-ear (BIET) technology addresses this gap by allowing observers to deliver immediate feedback via a discreet earpiece during instruction. Research supports BIET’s effectiveness in improving targeted teaching strategies, student engagement, and evidence-based communication (Coogle et al., 2018; Scheeler et al., 2012; Coogle et al., 2016). This study explores the use of BIET as a real-time coaching tool to support Graduate Teaching Assistants (GATs) in undergraduate education courses at a large U.S. research university, enhancing instructional effectiveness through in-the-moment guidance.
