Abstract

This study examined the impact of dual language immersion (DLI) programs on high school outcomes for multilingual learners and English-dominant students. While previous studies highlighted the benefits of bilingual education in early grades, this research aimed to fill the gap in understanding the long-term effects into high school. Leveraging a lottery system that determined assignment to DLI in kindergarten, I estimated the causal effect of DLI eligibility on multiple high school outcomes, including cumulative credits earned, career and technical education credits, dual enrollment credits, high school graduation, and attainment of the state seal of biliteracy. Findings suggested that DLI participation sustained early academic advantages, potentially leading to improved high school achievement and higher graduation rates.
