Abstract

This study critically examines Korean career education through the lens of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) to propose a more holistic and socially responsive approach. Using qualitative content analysis of national curriculum and policy documents and CASEL’s five SEL competencies as a framework, it investigates how career education is conceptualized and implemented in Korean K-12 education. Findings show career education remains largely individualistic and cognitively focused, emphasizing occupational readiness while neglecting emotional, relational, and communal skills. Strengths appear in self-awareness and responsible decision-making, but gaps exist in social awareness, relationship skills, and emotional regulation. This study expands career education beyond vocational guidance toward fostering agency, resilience, and community engagement, suggesting transformative SEL integration aligned with democratic citizenship and lifelong well-being.
