Abstract

As the capacities of learning analytics increase, student data gathered through Learning Management Systems (LMS) can support higher education institutions in building student success and improving retention rates. However, higher education professionals must recognize student perspectives about privacy and data control (Ifenthaler et al., 2021; Mutimukwe et al., 2022; Viberg et al., 2022). Although students are the primary stakeholders, much existing research does not consider student perspectives (West et al., 2020). Based on the SPICE Model (Mutimukwe et al., 2022) and the APCO Model (Smith et al., 2011), this study explores students’ perceptions of privacy in LMS. Preliminary results reveal that students are concerned, but ultimately trust institutions. Study findings will benefit university decision makers from educators to administrators.
