Aprendiendo Adentro con la Migra Afuera: Immigrant & Refugee Education Amidst State-Sanctioned Violence

Fri, April 10, 11:45am to 1:15pm PDT (11:45am to 1:15pm PDT), JW Marriott Los Angeles L.A. LIVE, Floor: 4th Floor, Diamond 1

Abstract

Researchers have long been studying the unique educational and psychological challenges that immigrant and refugee children endure, from the fear of deportation to their persistent stigmatization and inequitable access to educational opportunities (Abrego 2014, Gonzales, 2016; Gándara & Ee, 2021). In the midst of heightened anti-immigrant violence, this study explores how to continue to facilitate and support the learning and emotional wellbeing of immigrant and refugee children during a time of extreme anti-immigrant vitriol, actions, and policies. Through a participatory and community-based study with an immigrant organization in Southern California, this study embodies the spirit of futuring and unforgetting histories by foregrounding the stories and dreams of Latine immigrant and refugee families in an informal educational setting.
